Korean Air’s 3rd SkyTeam Livery Aircraft

Korean Air made public of its third SkyTeam livery aircraft on November 7.

Korean Air’s third SkyTeam livery aircraft that presented itself is a B737-800. The newly wrapped aircraft with a configuration of 149 seats will operate short-haul routes including China, Japan and South East Asia.

SkyTeam’s “Caring More About You” philosophy remains consistent throughout the member airlines, and the unified SkyTeam livery serves as further proof of this consistency. The delicate design includes features such as the dark blue SkyTeam logo on the tail fin and the SkyTeam name in large, dark blue letters along the front side of the fuselage.

The first aircraft wrapped in SkyTeam colors, a B777-200 with a configuration of 260 seats, began its operation in 2009 and the second aircraft, a B737-800 in 2011.

Hanjin Group Takes a New Leap in Central Asia Navoi Project

In the photo, Mr. Chang Hoon Chi, President and COO of Korean Air (5th from the left); H.E. Jun Daewan, Ambassador of Korea Republic to the Republic of Uzbekistan (3rd  from the left); Mr. Azimov Rustam Sadikovich, First Deputy Prime-Minister and Minister of Finance of the Republic of Uzbekistan (4th from the left); Mr. Tyan Valery, Director General of Uzbekistan Airways (6th from the left)
Hanjin Group’s ‘Navoi Project’, a project to develop Uzbekistan Navoi Airport as an international logistics hub in central Asia, has achieved an important landmark with the opening of the residential ‘HJ Navoi Complex’. Korean Air, a core subsidiary of Hanjin Group, held an opening ceremony for the Complex yesterday 19th of March.

The ‘HJ Navoi Complex’ is built on an 18,188 square meter site near Navoi International Airport, in order to support the development of the Navoi Free Industrial-Economic Zone (FIEZ). The Complex consists of three buildings with 51 rooms, with leisure facilities such as a fitness centre and swimming pool, for the use of Navoi FIEZ and airport related personnel.

Hanjin Group has progressed the ‘Navoi Project’ to provide a new growth momentum and to help Korean businesses enter the Central Asian Market. Hanjin’s ‘Navoi Project’ includes managing, alongside the Uzbekistan government, Navoi International Airport - modernizing airport facilities, establishing a global air cargo network and constructing an advanced logistics complex.

With the opening of the ‘HJ Navoi Complex’ the Hanjin Group will now be able to create a new logistics market as the FIEZ logistics volume will go up. In addition the Uzbekistan government will have increased momentum in attracting foreign businesses.

Among the eighty guests at the ceremony were Mr. Chang Hoon Chi, President and COO of Korean Air; Mr. Kyoo Won Kang, Senior Vice President of Korean Air; Mr. Azimov Rustam Sadikovich, First Deputy Prime-Minister and Minister of Finance of the Republic of Uzbekistan and Mr. Tyan Valery, Director General of Uzbekistan Airways.

Mr. Chi the President and COO of Korean Air said. “HJ Navoi Complex is the first chapter in Hanjin Group’s efforts to develop an advanced logistics complex in the FIEZ area.”

“This facility will not only provide a stable and pleasant residential environment for the regional workers in Navoi but will also contribute in attracting foreign businesses to the Navoi FIEZ area.”

Navoi FIEZ is a 5million square meter site created by local government legislation in 2008. The Uzbekistan government is currently working to accelerate foreign investment in electricity, electronic, machinery, petro chemistry and medical areas. Corporates from seventeen countries, including South Korea, China, Oman, Singapore and India, are currently constructing facilities in the area.

To upgrade the standard of the HJ Navoi Complex, Korean Air has utilised its cargo flights to transport good quality Korean furniture, kitchen utensils, and building materials for installation.

The HJ Navoi Complex will improve the work and living conditions and play an important role in successfully developing the Navoi FIEZ. In addition, by providing international standard accommodation for tourists traveling to nearby attractions such as the “Silk Road”, Bukhara and Samarkand, it will support the development of the Navoi tourism industry.

Hanjin Group will develop the 1.2 million square meter land in correlation with the development status of the Navoi FIEZ in order for it to play a crucial role in the success of the Navoi project.

Hanjin Group, since its first operation of cargo flights to Navoi in August 2008, has been conducting a variety of projects to create Navoi as a logistics hub of Central Asia.
Since January 2009, Hanjin Group has managed Navoi International Airport hand in hand with the Uzbekistan government. In January 2010 Hanjin Transportation Co., Ltd. co-established ‘Eurasia Logistics Service’ with one of the local ground transport companies in Navoi and in August 2010, built a new Navoi Cargo Terminal, designed to handle 100,000 tons of cargo a year to strengthen the ground network of Central Asia.

Korean Air Announces Q4 and Full-Year Performance for 2011

Seoul, 31 January 2012 – Korean Air, South Korea’s flagship airline, announced today its results for the fourth quarter and full year ended December 31, 2011.

The airline posted operating revenue of 3,062.1 billion KRW for the fourth quarter of 2011, up 7.7% compared to the same period last year, and an operating profit amounted to 76.8 billion KRW. International passenger and cargo businesses remained the major revenue contributors for the airline in Q4, accounting for 55.1% and 29.3% of the operating revenue respectively. Compared to the same period last year, net income for Q4 returned to the black and reached 125 billion KRW.

For the full year of 2011, the airline recorded operating revenue of 11,805.3 billion KRW, up 4.7% year-on-year, and operating profit of 394.1 billion KRW. However, due to a surge in jet fuel expenses, a net loss is resulted during the period.

International Passenger Business
During the quarter, it saw increased traffic across all routes, including Americas (up 12%), South-east Asian countries (up 12%), and China (up 14%); the international passenger segment recorded a Y-o-Y growth of 10.6% and 10.2% in passenger carrying capacity and traffic, reaching 21,081 million ASK and 15,774 million RPK respectively.    Overseas inbound traffic lifted 15% compared to the same period last year.

According to IATA, international air traffic is expected to grow by 5.2% in 2012, in which Asia region growth rate is projected to exceed 7%, and hence passenger traffic is expected to continue on a steadily upward trend. In addition, with the introduction of new routes (e.g. Incheon – DaNang, Incheon – Gatwick, Incheon – Urumqi and Incheon – Nairobi) and stepping up frequency on selected routes, such as Busan – Hong Kong, Incheon – Qingdao, Incheon – Tianjin, Jeju – Beijing and etc., the airline sees potential growth in passenger traffic.

With the latest addition of more fuel efficient aircrafts to the fleet, including Airbus A380 and Boeing B777-300ER, the airline is expected to see improvement in profitability.

Cargo Business
Cargo traffic recorded a year-on-year fall of 6.7% to 2,284 million FTK as it saw a Y-o-Y decrease of 10% and 4% in Korea outbound traffic and transit traffic respectively. While outbound cargo traffic from China reported a slump, outbound traffic from south-east Asian Countries, Japan, Americas and Europe recorded increases of 6%, 5%, 6% and 3% respectively. In Q4, it saw the return of wet-lease aircraft in October and November for profitability improvement. Charter flights to Sao Paulo and Lima were also put into operation in the quarter.

Going into 2012, cargo traffic is expected to be on a steadily upward trend with the Free Trade Agreement between Europe and Korea and The London Olympic Games. Korean Air will strive to enhance profitability and sustain growth by focusing operation on new markets development. Korean Air also sees the potential of leveraging Brazil as a hub and builds the cargo network in Latin America.

Korean Air will continue to expand its business prudently while enhancing the quality of its service in 2012. With its long-standing commitment to achieving “Excellence in Flight”, Korean Air aims to provide the best quality to its customers while bringing the best returns to its shareholders.
